Remote-work: A new way to achieve work-life balance
A lot of arguments have been thrown back and forth about the "new normal" which now stares us in the face. While both arguments are true to some extent, one perspective is very interesting not just for individuals but society at large.
Modern families usually struggle to achieve work-life balance as both parents usually run full-time jobs in order to make income, build a career and shoulder family responsibilities better. However, there is usually a tradeoff to this-parenting. While the couple is striving to make ends meet, they usually have lesser time to nurture their children properly while they are still young. Unfortunately, house assistants, nannies and even relatives wouldn't still fix their children and help them build their dream home.
Some solutions which have worked is to either have a partner, usually the wife, stay at home or do a less demanding activity in order to care for the kids. Unfortunately, this is usually a hard choice as someone may be forced to sacrifice their career to build a family. Also less demanding activities may not bring a consistent stream of income and those activities may be unfulfilling for others.
But what if both partners would not have to leave their job yet build a career of their choice, wouldn't this be exciting?
Fortunately, this is one thing remote job does perfectly. Individuals can get to work from their homes, build a career, get paid and still manage to parent more effectively. Although, this comes with its own challenges too. For instance, you need to learn how to manage distraction from the kids, be disciplined with time, ensure good Internet connection and have digital literacy skills.
Even if you still have to work a few times in the office e.g. twice-a-week or get lesser pay than working from the office. You still get the benefits of having an eye on your kids and that is priceless.
Another argument is, "well, not all jobs can be done remotely", which is right. However, as technology advances, a lot more jobs can and will be done remotely. As of now, Doctors, Lawyers, Nurses, Engineers, Teachers, Accountants now work online which wasn't possible in the past, thanks to the cloud. The list keeps growing and the opportunity is endless.
